A 2028 Forest Payment Date Is a Calendar Readers Understand

The easiest way to understand the Tropical Forests Forever Facility is not its bond structure. It is the date. Thursday's story said the satellite method works while the payment stream likely waits until 2028 or 2029.

That date turns climate finance into a reader-service item. Climate Home News reported that the facility's designers expect a two-to-three-year ramp before rainforest countries receive performance-based payments. [1] TFFF says the model pays countries for verified tropical forest conservation and channels 20 percent of payments to Indigenous peoples and local communities. [2]

The launch declaration supplies the political scale. TFFF said more than $5.5 billion had been announced and 53 countries had endorsed the launch declaration, including tropical forest countries representing most of the developing world's tropical forests. [3] Those numbers are impressive. They are not the same as a payment to a forest country.

The accountability calendar should be plain. By the end of 2026, did public capital meet the threshold? By 2028, did first payments arrive? For what verified forest outcome? A climate mechanism that cannot answer those questions has only a press release.

Dates do not cheapen climate finance. They make the promise auditable after the summit hall empties.
