Waymo's Flood Recall Published the Fleet Number

The flooded road disclosed the fleet.

Thursday's paper said Waymo's recall was 3,791 vehicles and that the fleet number itself was the business fact. Friday's point is that the number has now outgrown the safety anecdote.

Bloomberg reported the recall after a Waymo vehicle drove onto a flooded road. [1] The Next Web and Electrek both carried the 3,791-vehicle figure and the over-the-air software remedy. [2] [3] Traffic Technology Today described the recall as nearly 3,800 robotaxis after vehicles encountered floodwater. [4]

Those stories are true. They are also incomplete if read only as a no-injury software fix. A fleet of 3,791 vehicles is not a pilot. It is a public-road operating system with weather limits, mapping assumptions, remote-operations procedures, and a recall channel that updates cars the way enterprise software is patched.

That is why the number matters. The same filing that reassured readers the fix can be pushed over the air also told them the size of the system being patched. A robotaxi recall is safety news. A robotaxi census is market news. It gives investors, regulators, and riders the same baseline number for the first time. Scale is now documented. That matters.
