Gas Pump Holds at $4.51 as Memorial Day Travel Sets Records

AAA's national average for a gallon of regular gasoline read $4.515 Sunday and held into Monday morning, the first weekly decline of the Memorial Day window after three straight weekly increases [1]. The print is down from $4.529 Saturday and from the Wednesday peak of $4.56, AAA's four-year high. The Sunday print is $1.33 above the year-ago number ($3.187). California led the state averages at $6.111; Mississippi held the floor at $4.01.

The paper's Sunday account read the AAA tape as the household-side verdict on Trump's Saturday "largely negotiated" Truth Social: pump prices did not move on the diplomatic claim, the futures market closed Brent six percent down on the week as the structural verdict on the framework's optimism, and the TSA Friday throughput printed 2,976,209 — the highest Memorial Day Friday on record [2]. Monday's tape extends the verdict by inches: Sunday's print is the first weekly decline; the Monday morning print is, as of 8 a.m. Eastern, identical to Sunday's. The household-side number now moves modestly on the diplomatic optimism. The futures-market number moved sharply on the same news.

The TSA throughput is the other half of the verdict. The Friday number — 2,976,209 — was the highest Memorial Day Friday on record. AAA's pre-weekend projection of forty-five million Americans traveling at least fifty miles between Thursday and Monday cleared by Sunday morning [3]. Eighty-seven percent of those travelers drove. The TSA-cleared count for the four-day window will land Tuesday afternoon. The Saturday throughput cleared three million for the second time in agency history.

What sits underneath the household-side hold is the GasBuddy attribution. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis, told Axios on Friday that more than nine-tenths of the year-over-year pump-price gap is attributable to the Iran conflict's effect on Strait of Hormuz shipping [4]. The Iran war is now in its twelfth week. Ship movement through the chokepoint that handles roughly one-fifth of global oil supply is at the historic floor De Haan described as "near-standstill." The structural read is that the futures market priced in Friday's diplomatic optimism (Brent down six percent on the week) but the household-side pump price is operating on a four-to-six-week lag from crude inputs and has not yet absorbed the Friday move. The Monday print is the first reading after Friday's futures close. If the Brent close holds through this week's open, AAA's national average should approach $4.45 by Friday's print.

Bitcoin held under $78,000 through Sunday and printed $77,400 at the Asian-session open Sunday night New York time. Two-week net ETF outflows reached $2.26 billion, the second-largest two-week drawdown since the spot-ETF complex's January 2024 approval. The Asian-session Brent contract opened Sunday night at $99.40 per barrel, the WTI at $94.20 — both down from Friday's New York close ($104.07 / $96.60) on continued diplomatic optimism. The CME Group's Sunday-night contracts moved cleanly. The structural reading from a futures desk: Friday's close held into the Asian session; the U.S. open Monday morning was bank-holiday; the actual print landed at the Tuesday open.

The Monday tape's verdict on the Saturday Truth Social is therefore continuing to be: the household side absorbs the optimism on a lag, the futures market absorbed it immediately, the TSA tape confirmed the demand-side number, the crypto tape extended its drawdown. The Iran war's effect on the household-side cost of summer is structural, durable, and now in its third Memorial Day. The verdict on whether the Saturday "largely negotiated" produces a structural ceiling on Brent has another week to run.
