Earth Day 2026 falls Wednesday, April 22, with the theme "Our Power, Our Planet" and a call to action that Earthday.org describes as "persistent public pressure that is impossible to ignore." [1] The paper does not usually lead with the calendar. This edition leads with the physics.
The paper's Sunday account of the Lower 48 drought reports 61 percent of the contiguous states under drought and the Palmer Drought Severity Index at its highest March reading since 1895 — only July and August 1934, inside the Dust Bowl, were drier. [4] The runway into Tuesday is drawn in soil moisture, snow-water equivalents, and krill distributions. [2]
Earth Day 2026 opens with a ledger, not a rally. The organizers know this, which is why they wrote their slogan as a claim on power rather than a plea for one. [1]
