Hurricane Center Adds Gray X Symbol to Identify Quiet Atlantic Areas

The National Hurricane Center introduced a gray X symbol on its Graphical Tropical Weather Outlook this season. The symbol flags areas with little to no chance of tropical cyclone development — previously plotted in yellow alongside the low-chance category, which crowded the chart with ambiguity. The change took effect with the daily outlook cycle on May 15. [1]

The gray X is one of several 2026 product updates the NHC documented in March. The 2024 experimental forecast cone moved to operational status, and a new experimental cone covering 90 percent of forecast track possibilities replaced it. New storm surge watches and warnings extended to Hawaii. A rip current risk map covers Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands when at least one tropical system is active. [2]

The gray X is the most visible. The Graphical Tropical Weather Outlook is the public's first encounter with NHC's daily product, more often viewed than read. Replacing a yellow circle with a gray X for near-zero development chance does what the agency's text descriptions could not — it tells the reader at a glance which features the forecasters are watching and which they have set aside. On X, NHC_Atlantic launched the daily outlook cycle on May 15, two weeks before the season opens June 1.

For a reader on the Gulf Coast or the Eastern Seaboard, the practical effect is one of attention. A yellow circle invited monitoring. A gray X frees it. The service-journalism gap the paper holds is small but real: most outlets covered the seasonal outlook and skipped the product change that will shape how readers experience the season day to day.
