Overdose Counter Sits at Seventy-Nine Thousand Yet Stays Above Twenty Nineteen

The 2024 U.S. drug overdose death total is 79,384, according to NCHS Data Brief 549. Opioid-involved deaths fell 32 percent to 54,045. The year-over-year drop from 2023's 105,007 is the largest single-year decline on record. [1]

The paper's Monday brief on the overdose counter at 69,973 used the 12-month-ending-September provisional estimate. The finalized NCHS Data Brief 549 number for calendar-year 2024 is 79,384. The correction matters because the larger number is the one the field will cite going forward — and because the drop, even at its real magnitude, still leaves the post-pandemic mortality footprint roughly 4,200 above 2019's 70,630 baseline. [2]

KFF's analysis broke out the state-level declines. The largest year-over-year drops were Virginia at 44 percent, Wisconsin at 44 percent, and West Virginia at 46 percent. [3] The Appalachian states that drove the worst of the fentanyl peak are pulling down the national total faster than national outlets have registered. FactCheck.org, on X, cited the CDC's 79,383 provisional figure to correct a Trump claim of 350,000 deaths.

The decline is real and historic. The structural elevation is also real. A counter reading 79,384 in a country that read 70,630 in 2019 says that the post-pandemic peak is receding but has not finished receding. Whether any state publishes a Q1 2026 update Tuesday is the open question.
