The Knicks have not started the Finals, and ABC already has a scarcity receipt. Sports Media Watch says Knicks-Cavaliers Game 1 averaged 7.1 million viewers on ESPN, the largest Eastern Conference Finals Game 1 audience since 2018. [1]
Wednesday's paper said ABC inherited a finished Knicks Finals product after New York ended its long absence from the league's last stage. Today's narrower point is that the audience evidence predates the Finals. The New York product is not a hope. It has already printed.
That changes the way the waiting period should be read. A week before a championship series can feel like dead air, but for a broadcaster it is shelf space. The Knicks' rarity, celebrity gravity and local-market size all become promotional material before the opponent, injuries or tactical questions take over the actual basketball.
X will make the story about belief: cursed franchise, chosen city, league plot, celebrity courtside. Mainstream recaps can make it about rest and matchup. The commercial story is less sentimental. ABC inherits a Finals property whose conference-final opening already outperformed recent history. [1] [2]
That does not guarantee a Finals number, because opponent, series length and scheduling still matter. It does mean ABC begins the week with evidence rather than prayer, and with New York scarcity already measured before the trophy series gives it a national stage.
